Walk and Talk in Slievenacloy Nature Reserve | Northern Ireland Humanists

June 8th, 2024 12:45   --   16:00

Jim Bradley, Belfast Hills Partnership Manager, will lead our first Walk and Talk of the season. These walks are very popular thanks to Jim's comprehensive knowledge of the flora, fauna, and history of the hills. We will meet at 12:45 at the entrance on the Ballycolin Road which can be reached from the Colin Glen Road. Please bring sturdy footwear and be prepared for poor weather. The walk will be around two hours and requires a moderate level of fitness. Dogs must be kept on a lead at all times.

This upland terrain was a typical setting for prehistoric burial activity, with cairns in particular often set in prominent positions on ridges and hill tops. It is believed that this was an important sacred landscape during the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. Initial impressions may suggest only grassy fields, but the site is in fact a vast wildlife paradise of grassland, meadows, rush, and heath.
