Humanist principles in unprincipled times, with A C Grayling | Oxford Humanists

11 February 2025, 18:30 -- 19:30

How should humanists respond to a time in which 'the Bannon playbook' seems to be fully in practice, in politics and society? Join us (online or in person) to explore this topic.

Our monthly Oxford Humanists Speaker Programme, held on the second Tuesday of each month. As this is a Zoom presentation, we will be offering the option of in-person viewing with the Oxford Humanists group or online viewing for those who prefer to join us online. We expect to get close to venue capacity so please register to hold your place!

Our February Talk: 'Humanist Principles in Unprincipled Times' with Prof A.C. Grayling, CBE

How should humanists respond to a time of rising authoritarianism, nationalism, populism and challenges to the rules-based international order?

Our speaker: A. C. Grayling CBE MA DPhil (Oxon) FRSA FRSL is the Principal of Northeastern University London, and its Professor of Philosophy. He is also a Supernumerary Fellow of St Anne's College, Oxford. He is the author of over thirty books of philosophy, biography, history of ideas, and essays. He was for a number of years a columnist on the Guardian, the Times, and Prospect magazine. He has contributed to many leading newspapers in the UK, US and Australia, and to BBC radios 4, 3 and the World Service, for which he did the annual 'Exchanges at the Frontier' series; and he has often appeared on television. He has twice been a judge on the Booker Prize, in 2014 serving as the Chair of the judging panel. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, a Vice President of Humanists UK, Patron of the Defence Humanists, Honorary Associate of the Secular Society, and a Patron of Dignity in Dying.

We are thrilled to host Prof Grayling via a live Zoom link and we hope you'll join us for what promises to be a fascinating and thought-provoking discussion. This event is free to join, however we do request registration. When registering, please let us know if you will be joining online (Zoom) or in-person to help us manage numbers with the venue and, as always, your donations support our running costs.

For those interested in joining us for dinner directly following Prof Grayling's talk, we will book tables next door at Lulu's Ethiopian and Eritrean Cafe - send us an email to signal your interest!
