From Baptist Minister to Humanist – In conversation with John Hayes

Registration is closed for this event
22 April 2026, 12:30 -- 13:30

Leaving a religious community can be very difficult indeed. You risk losing a whole community, your sense of belonging, your sense of purpose, and in John’s case; also your livelihood. Join us as we talk to successful businessman, and former Baptist Minister John Hayes about his journey away from religion.

Despite a non-religious background, John Hayes became attracted to Christianity as a young boy. At the age of 21 he began training to be a Baptist minister, in Glasgow and London. Even at this time, however, he grappled with serious doubts and guilt. Nevertheless, struggled on and became a minister responsible for two churches.

Finally at the age of 40, he could no longer continue, and left the church. Having abandoned his faith, he felt a loss of meaning for several years. Fortunately, he found a new career and eventually began his own successful, national business. His subsequent involvement with the Humanist movement has provided him with the fulfilment and purpose he was looking for. With the encouragement of friends, he has now produced a memoir.

John will join Terri in conversation and will talk about his experiences with leaving religion and a career in the church.

This is an online event. Free for any Faith to Faithless service users to attend. And a small donation from anyone else who would like to attend would be greatly appreciated.
