Did you know that male trees can turn female, that slugs have both female and male reproductive organs, and that many species of birds pair up into same-sex couples?

As a member of the LGBT community and advocate for increasing accessibility in outdoor spaces, Connor Butler (Head of Learning at Chelsea Physic Garden) developed a guided walk challenging perceptions of what is considered ‘natural’ or ‘unnatural’. Discover the seedy lives of plants and how ‘queerness’ can be found in everything from birds to bugs. With an aim to help Londoners see ‘ordinary’ wildlife from new perspectives, Connor encourages everyone to take time to appreciate the smallest details in nature and to show love for the often unloved creatures on our diverse planet.

It has always been important to LGBT Humanists to explore scientific studies which indicate that queerness is natural. Several examples can be found in their newsletter archive of anthropological and botanical studies on the subject, such as a review in 1999 of the book Biological Exuberance: Animal Homosexuality and Natural Diversity. Connor’s walk is your chance to learn about these scientific studies from an expert ecologist!
