Humanists UK has today launched its new social media campaign, entitled #HumanistBookshelf. The aim of the campaign is simple: to celebrate the great humanist thinkers who have helped to define humanism.
One of the best aspects of the humanist approach to life is that we have no need for holy books, or saints, or spiritual leaders. Instead, we as individuals can take ideas, wisdom, and inspiration from a range of sources to suit our needs. We also accept that most will have shortcomings as well as positives. Bookshelves, not Bibles!
One of the aims of this campaign is to reach millions of people who have never heard of humanism before. This year, we’re doing that by showing off just how much humanism is already out there, in bookshops, on TV, in film, and in the wider culture.
The campaign
Over two weeks, the campaign will encourage people to give their own humanist book recommendations, and to share photos of their favourite books (such as ‘shelfies’), passages, and quotations from fiction and non-fiction that speak to humanist values.
As well as publishing graphics on social media that help to define humanist values, Humanists UK will also be publishing lists of top humanist books on its website, including some based on suggestions sent in by readers on the hashtag.
