Looking back over 2014 – and hoping for a better world in 2015

1 January, 2015

H4BW wishes all our supporters a happy 2015 and hopes that you will be able join in some of the actions mentioned below.

Reviews and highlights of 2014 from some of the organisations we support:

New Year’s Resolutions (some easier than others)?

  • Move your money – everyone who has a bank account or savings or investments can make a difference – see www.moveyourmoney.org.uk.
  • Do something about TTIP, the US-EU trade deal that threatens democracy and national standards and regulations. Find out more.
  • Demand transparency. The World Development Movement asks people to join them in demanding mandatary carbon reporting  that would reveal the true extent of emissions from financial institutions.
  • Call on the IMF and World Bank to drop the debt for countries fighting Ebola via a Jubilee Debt Campaign.
  • Read the label when you shop – where did the product come from? How was it made or grown? Fairtrade can help.
  • Listen to a brief talk on “Why Some Countries Are Poor and Others Rich” – pointing to some correlation between religiosity and poverty but also to intrinsic problems in some countries, some more soluble than others.

Coming up in 2015, actions that humanists might want to participate in (we’ll send out reminders to those of you on the H4BW email list during the year):

  • 14th February: The Climate Coalition Valentine’s Day Launch of Show the Love, when people around Britain will show their love for the  things and people that are already affected by climate change by turning their red hearts green.
  • 7th March, 1.00pm: Time to Act on Climate Change march, London, to put pressure on political parties before the general election, and raise the profile of climate change. Find out more and get in touch with CCC if interested in arranging something in your local area.
  • From 21st March: The Climate Coalition “For The Love Of…Spring” an ideal time to come together, celebrate the natural world around us and highlight the risks posed by climate change.
  • 7th May: General Election – don’t forget to tell candidates that you care about human rights, global justice, the environment…
  • 17th June: The Big Climate Lobby, a key opportunity to influence the new government. It will be the first time many of the new MPs will have been lobbied in this way and will highlight the importance of strong climate leadership to the British public.
  • December 2015: UN climate negotiations in Paris – find out more at http://www.cop21.net/ and expect demonstrations in London and Paris (see CCC plans at http://www.campaigncc.org/COP21Paris)
