Hi, I'm Peter

An experienced humanist celebrant based near Chester, I love being involved in creating and delivering Naming Ceremonies.

Bringing people together to celebrate new life, new beginnings, they can be held almost literally anywhere including in your home, garden, outside in a public space, a community hall, a public house.

Relaxed yet also uplifting, these ceremonies are joyful and optimistic - full of meaning.

What I do

I help you structure, write and deliver a ceremony that you will enjoy, that conveys something of your love for your child or whoever is at the centre of the ceremony.

I would need to meet with you to discuss the ceremony and learn something about the person (s) who will be named at the ceremony – ideally I’ll meet them too!

At our meeting I’ll ask lots of questions to understand the sort of ceremony you would like - suggest ideas and take lots of notes. We can discuss what role you would like me to play – I can conduct the whole ceremony for you or work besides other people – family/friends who want to be involved, guide-parents. We can consider the inclusion of symbolic actions, poems and readings.

We can share something of the person’s story (however new that story is!) – how they came to be and how they’ve developed – perhaps consider your hopes for their futures.

After our meeting, I’ll write a ceremony script for you which I’ll share before the day to make sure you’re happy with it.

Together we will ensure that the ceremony will be filled with joy and reflect your personalities, hopes and aspirations.

About Me

I’m passionate and enthusiastic about life and people. I genuinely believe that we’re all connected in some way to each other and ultimately to all life.

My partner, children and their families and latterly grandchildren too, always help remind me how lucky I am to have them in my life!

I’ve had a varied working life – working with folk in industrial, professional, commercial, care and charitable settings.

I enjoy art, reading and writing, music, gardening, walking and travel. I’ve helped create and deliver courses and presentations for schools and other organisations to help look at life and living.

My work as a celebrant allows me to meet so many people and be involved in some aspect of their lives in one way or another - learn of other’s lives – share emotions. I always gain something from meeting others - hopefully I get to help people myself in some small way.

We were so pleased with our son's naming ceremony and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Peter to anyone considering planning one. We felt very comfortable with him guiding us through the process. He offered plenty of suggestions and was easily accommodating of our preferences. He led the ceremony with a thoughtfulness and humour. We appreciated the time he spent getting to know us and familiarising himself with our outdoor location.  Many of our guests told us that they had found it a really meaningful ceremony and they would consider having one for their child or that they wished it had been an option when their children were young.

I honestly don't know where to start ... Peter is warm, welcoming & asked such brilliant questions of what your looking to achieve in a naming day and fact find about how our son came to be. Along with what personal touches we would like within the naming day. Peter kept in contact with us regarding the "script" he was creating for the naming.& OMG I cried when I read it because he literally captured everything we wanted to achieve and that was to celebrate our son and everything about him. We planted a tree & it had such meaning for us; our son's naming day & Peter just got it & it was conveyed on the day also. Everyone who was present at the naming day and there was over 80 people said how wonderful and special & just lovely it was - alot had never been to naming day and say how much better it was than a standard christening . Honestly we have memories to last a life time & Peter helped create such a perfect day which his words . Thank you so much for being part of our day , I highly recommend Peter and will happily use again . Peter thank you for all you did , words can't convey how amazing it truly was .

We are committed to a code of conduct, and have a transparent and robust complaints process in the rare case of a problem. We all pay a monthly fee to Humanists UK to further support the work of the charity, and are part of a regional network for like-minded celebrants for support and learning.

Humanist naming ceremonies

A humanist naming ceremony is a joyous event, and the perfect opportunity to gather friends and family to welcome your child into the world, with no reference to religion. It focuses on the child, their future and the circle of love and support around them, offering a sincere and personal alternative to a christening or other religious ceremony.
