Hi, I'm Peter

An experienced humanist funeral celebrant based near Chester, I write and deliver ceremonies to commemorate and celebrate the lives of people who have died and hopefully help families deal with feelings of loss and grief.

Ceremonies may be funerals held at crematoria and/or burials at cemeteries or memorials, ashes scatterings and interments.

I also meet people “pre-need” who wish to consider and plan their ceremony in advance to help their family at a later time.

What I do

I help you structure, write and deliver a ceremony and liaise with other professionals involved. Sometimes I’ll write and deliver the ceremony in it’s entirety, other times I will have less direct input and work alongside you and/or family and friends.

To prepare a ceremony I would need to meet with you to discuss the ceremony and learn something about the deceased and their personality. I’ll ask lots of questions & take lots of notes and then use these to write a ceremony script. I’ll share this with you in advance to make sure you’re happy with it.

Together we will ensure that the ceremony will commemorate and celebrate the life of the person who has died in a manner which is right for them and for you and others who were part of their life.

Once I know something of the person’s personality I can help you choose music if you wish and appropriate poetry if you want any included – words that feel right for the person and their family.

On the day of the ceremony I will arrive early and liaise with others involved and do everything I can to help make sure that everything goes well.

About Me

I’m passionate and enthusiastic about life and people. I genuinely believe that we’re all connected in some way to each other and ultimately to all life.

My partner, children and their families and latterly grandchildren too, always help remind me how lucky I am!

I’ve had a varied working life – working with folk in industrial, professional, commercial, care and charitable settings.

I enjoy art, reading and writing, music, gardening, walking and travel. I’ve helped create and deliver courses and presentations for schools and other organisations to help look at life and living.

My work as a celebrant allows me to meet so many people and be involved in some aspect of their lives in one way or another - learn of other’s lives – share emotions. I always gain something from meeting others - hopefully I get to help people myself in some small way.

Peter was fantastic and delivered the most uplifting, yet poignant ceremony we could have hoped for. He was incredibly helpful and understanding throughout the planning of the memorial and everybody talked about how magnificent he was. I cannot recommend him highly enough.

Peter’s kindness and compassion shone through. His delivery of the service was outstanding

We could not have asked for a more fitting tribute.

Peter made my anxieties disappear and guided me knowledgeably and kindly through the process of constructing a service my mum would have thoroughly enjoyed. He took great care and much time collecting information from me and my dad, whom he visited in his care home, and shaped the whole into articulate, insightful and humorous text. He delivers sincerely, clearly and without anything that could be called \"showiness\". At a slight technical hitch in our family photo film, he was calm and efficient, when I was would have dissolved! My dad liked Peter and the service and so I hope one day Peter will be available to use his many skills and empathy to celebrate my dad\'s life too. I cannot praise him enough.

Peter was very helpful, kind , sincere , caring , and sympathetic to our family . He spoke at the funeral with respect and kindness which our family truly appreciated. We could not asked for anything better . Thank you Peter .

HUMANIST CEREMONIES™ is the network of more than 550 celebrants, trained by national charity Humanists UK to a gold standard to provide memorable and meaningful humanist ceremonies to non-religious people. Operating throughout England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands, we deliver authentic, tailor-made and heartfelt ceremonies for life’s key moments. They are always inclusive and welcoming, regardless of the beliefs of those attending.

You can trust Humanist Ceremonies celebrants: We are DBS-checked, fully insured, and regularly peer reviewed for quality assurance. We are committed to a code of conduct, and have a transparent and robust complaints process in the rare case of a problem. We all pay a monthly fee to Humanists UK to further support the work of the charity, and are part of a regional network for like-minded celebrants for support and learning.

Humanist funerals

Humanist funerals, memorials and ash ceremonies are a fitting way to honour a unique life with warmth, sensitivity and meaning, but without reference to religion or an afterlife. They put the story of the person who has died at the heart of the ceremony, paying tribute to them and the legacy they leave, and provide an opportunity to bring people together, not just to share sadness but to celebrate a life lived.
