Why I Offer Naming Ceremonies

If you’d like to celebrate the arrival of a new child or creation of a new family, and to share all the joy, fun and emotions of the occasion, then I may be able to help.

My name is Victoria Bainbridge, I am a mum to twins and I specialise in offering Humanist Naming Ceremonies. I do this because when my girls were born I wanted to celebrate their new little lives, and we wanted to formally welcome them into our circle of family and friends. I felt that this was an important rite of passage. We don’t go to Church so wouldn’t have them Christened, but do believe in kindness, conviviality and the value of having a loving and ethical network around our girls. The ceremony gave us a huge sense of comfort and allowed us to thank the generations before us as we move onto caring for the next. It also left us with stories and smiles to share as the girls grow up.

This was an experience I’d now like to offer to you.

Sounds nice – what will actually happen?

Whatever you want, within reason! Naming Ceremonies take place all over the world in all sorts of different ways, be they vibrant, mellow, quirky, sweet. Lots of people appoint guideparents, make parental commitments, have a symbolic act and invite friends and family to stay afterwards to eat, drink and make memories! The ceremonies I conduct will generally last about 20 minutes and can take place in your home, a kids café, hotel or anywhere you’d like really. You’ll tell me about the things that are important to you and your family and I’ll weave that into a story to tell on the day. We aim for a lot laughter and maybe the odd tear. Life is like that.

I love music and the sea so we incorporated a lot of singing into our ceremony and dipped our babies’ toes in the sea. In preparing for your ceremony, we will talk about your ideas and my experience of ceremonies, and ensure we hit the tone you want.

Next steps for you?

I’m an accredited mentor for other Celebrants in the North East so have a good idea of what’s possible. I offer a service that can range from writing and conducting to your ceremony, to project managing the whole event. I have organised large events for Durham University and Newcastle University, and know that after my girls were born I appreciated all the help I could get!

If you’d like to chat further about non-religious Naming Ceremonies in and around Newcastle, please get in touch. It costs nothing to talk! More details on the writing process are below.

“The naming ceremony for our son exceeded our expectations by far. We had not been to any humanist ceremony previously but looked for a personal, non-religious ceremony. The level of thought, attention to detail and care with which Victoria created for us a wonderful ceremony was absolutely fabulous. We were looking forward to it before the event, enjoyed it very much on the day and I am sure will keep this as a beautiful memory for us and our son. We are very grateful to Victoria for a meaningful and personal ceremony which was at the heart of the Welcome to the World-Party for our son. Many of our guests also commented very positively how much they liked the ceremony and enquired about these for different occasions.” JT, Whitley Bay(photo c www.facebook.com/davidtipladyphoto)

Hi Victoria,We just wanted to say thank you again for Saturday. It was such a lovely ceremony, funny and emotional, and exactly what we wanted.Everyone told us how much they enjoyed it, how special it was, and how impressed they were. My dad in particular has told us over and over how impressed he was with the ceremony. Sarah, Ashbrooke Cricket Club, May 2023

Victoria was amazing. We had a fantastic day. Victoria gave us lots of ideas and suggestions for the day. A lovely informal ceremony that was centred around what we asked for. A relaxed and fun ceremony. Fantastic.

Victoria really made Daniel’s naming day special – The ceremony was perfect, it turned out to be a lovely sunny day so we changed the plans and had the celebration outside, Victoria took all the changes in her stride and delivered a thoughtful and funny ceremony. Many people hadn’t been to a naming ceremony before and commented how much they enjoyed the day, Thanks again Victoria.

Victoria had been brilliant throughout. She listened to exactly what we wanted and took everything we said on board. The ceremony was beyond perfect! Everyone raved over how amazing and thoughtful she was and so many people said how they wished they had done something similar.

Where I work

I'm based in Cullercoats, North Tyneside. I'm most familiar with the areas around Newcastle and Northumberland. But have conducted ceremonies in Yorkshire and Edinburgh too, and always very happy to explore new places!

Fees from...

My fee is £250. And ask for 45p per mile for single journeys over 20 miles.

Generally, we first have a chat by phone to understand each other's expectations. Then meet to collect the lovely stories, anecdotes and feelings to convey in the ceremony. I'll write a draft script and we share that between us until you're happy. We aim to have it completed a week before the event and on the day I generally arrive 30 mins early. Joy.

Humanist naming ceremonies

A humanist naming ceremony is a joyous event, and the perfect opportunity to gather friends and family to welcome your child into the world, with no reference to religion. It focuses on the child, their future and the circle of love and support around them, offering a sincere and personal alternative to a christening or other religious ceremony.
