I gain a huge amount of professional pleasure delivering funerals , I cannot imagine a time that it won't be the most incredible humbling honour to do what I do.
There is no getting away from the fact that the vast majority of funerals will be incredibly sad and poignant moments but they can also incorporate great joy and give thanks for the times shared with the person whose life we are gathering to celebrate.
It is my job to work with those left behind to create the funeral they want. This can make my role on the day of the funeral as simple as me introducing the family and pushing the buttons for the music if they want to do the majority of the content themselves, all the way through to me being the only voice heard on the day and reading out a full life story.
The important part for me is just to listen , to what the family wants from the funeral and then to them just share their memories, later when I sit down to write all I do is just put their incredible stories into order and help their loved one live on in peoples memories for a little bit longer by describing them in a truthful , honest but loving way.
People are all unique and complex , no matter how long they lived and what they spent their time doing. I believe a person should be recognised with love when we are speaking their name for the final time and if that means we along with their best bits include their quirks , their silly bits , their infuriating mannerisms, tales of their awful cooking or their terrible jokes , then that is what we should do.
Outside the norm is OK with me !
