Hi, I'm Caroline

You are probably looking at this page because someone you love has died - I empathise. And I hope I can help you with the planning and the delivery of the right funeral or memorial ceremony for your loved one.

I 'found' humanism when my father died in 1989 and have led humanist and non-religious funerals and memorials since 2001. Along the way I have trained and mentored many others as they became celebrants too.

Every single ceremony is as unique as the person whose life is being remembered; the ninety-eight-year-old grandparent, the stand-up comedian, the three-month-old baby.

I will work with you to write and then lead the funeral so that you can grieve in the way you need and want to. In a crematorium, in a burial ground, at a pub or a town hall.

If Led Zepplin is right, great. If Mozart is more appropriate, terrific. Taylor Swift...wonderful. Recordings of the shipping forecast, a favourite football moment, the person's own voice. We will make it work.

If you want poetry chosen and read, yes, of course. And if poetry wasn't the person's kind of thing, that's equally fine.

I don't include a sermon on humanism. Instead, I focus on the person’s life story, their experiences and their unique place in the world.

Those life stories can be warming and wonderful, but sometimes a story is heartbreaking. Whatever the story, I will write and deliver it with honesty and heartfelt authenticity.

And as for me, I am a London Scot who loves the natural world, the seaside and a good glass of red wine with family and friends. And I am currently back at university part-time, studing for a Masters in Creative Writing.

Caroline conducted my father's funeral with such a light touch, yet her words were profoundly comforting to us. She really 'got' him and the ceremony was so, so right.

Where I work

I live in Ealing, in West London and lead funerals and memorials or 'celebration of life' ceremonies in London and the South East.

But if the funeral is further afield, I will travel, provided I can get there by public transport (I try to limit car use as much as possible for environmental reasons).

I like to meet families face-to-face to discuss funerals. But if distance or time are issues, I use Zoom and Teams so we can meet online instead.

Fees from...

£350 (single) - £450 (double) for a funeral ceremony (cremation or burial) in London. Fees for Celebrations of Life (Memorial ceremonies) are separately negotiated, depending on location and complexity.

Operating throughout England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands, we deliver authentic, tailor-made and heartfelt ceremonies for life’s key moments. They are always inclusive and welcoming, regardless of the beliefs of those attending.

You can trust Humanist Ceremonies celebrants: We are DBS-checked, fully insured, and regularly peer reviewed for quality assurance. We are committed to a code of conduct, and have a transparent and robust complaints process in the rare case of a problem. We all pay a monthly fee to Humanists UK to further support the work of the charity, and are part of a regional network for like-minded celebrants for support and learning.

Humanist funerals

Humanist funerals, memorials and ash ceremonies are a fitting way to honour a unique life with warmth, sensitivity and meaning, but without reference to religion or an afterlife. They put the story of the person who has died at the heart of the ceremony, paying tribute to them and the legacy they leave, and provide an opportunity to bring people together, not just to share sadness but to celebrate a life lived.
