Having attended many funerals over the years, well you do as you get older, I came to realise that a service is more personal when a life is celebrated and the individual is the sole focus of the day.
My parents died in 2013 and 2023 and both had Humanist Celebrants conducting their funerals. Many people that attended commented on how lovely it was to hear about them both in a warm, respectful and caring way.
A comedian friend of mine asked that people tell jokes at his funeral, almost like an open mic session. A neighbour had, 'Going Underground' played as his parting song.
And I have had somebody, who is perfectly healthy by the way, planning their own send off by requesting that I conduct his funeral and dress up as a Panto Dame - my background in performing as an entertainer finally becoming useful!
I think that our final farewell should be whatever we want it to be. Whether it's laughter, anecdotes, memorable moments, sayings, poetry or readings from friends and family, splashed with videos or music or both. Maybe everyone will be asked to wear Hawaiian shirts or yellow dresses and bright orange shoes or maybe just the celebrant!!
Whatever your requests or requirements, we can make it work and deliver the most memorable occasion, which will bring a smile, while shedding a tear at the same time.
Here's my promise to you.
From the moment you contact me, we'll arrange a visit that is convenient to your diary. We will take time to plan everything together during my visit. I will then write up a first draft of the service and you'll have plenty of time to make any adjustments. When you are happy with everything and checked that nothing has been forgotten, we’ll sign it off.
Remember, it's your decisions that will ultimately determine the style of the service. I'm here to guide, comfort and support you every step of the way. Then I'll deliver a service to leave your heart filled with happiness of a life that was lived.
When everybody is feeling broken inside, I'll be the chain to link you all back together.
