Hi, I'm Susannah

I am inspired by people’s stories, genuinely interested in their lives and filled with wonder at their achievements. My love of reading and storytelling, coupled with my humanist convictions, mean that I have just the right skills to put together a meaningful, resonant ceremony for you or your loved one. I am constantly struck by what a privilege it is to craft a ceremony that is tailor-made around a central character, truly reflecting their personality, life and experiences.

Outside of work, I enjoy music and singing, exploring the natural environment and continuing to learn about the interconnectedness of the world we live in. As a Humanist, I believe it is life enhancing to pour my energy into the one life that I have, not by focusing on the material, but through my relationships with others, my joys in nature and my awe of science.

For over 5 years, I have also been volunteering as a member of the Spiritual Care Team at Weston Hospicecare, supporting people both on the In-patient Unit, Day Hospice and out in the community. I feel very strongly that everyone deserves to access the same emotional and spiritual support, regardless of whether they are religious or not.

Dealing with the death of my Dad was understandably incredibly challenging for me and my family, so I am very glad that I chose Susannah to manage the service. She took a lot of time and consideration to find out about my Dad and ensure that all the requests from my family were met within the wording of the tribute. There were lots of details to think about in organising the service for my Dad and Susannah had thought about all of them and I’m happy to say that the service went smoothly and without a hitch. I’d highly recommend Susannah.

Susannah guided the service with such care that it felt deeply personal and genuine. Her calm and steady presence fostered a real sense of trust and humanity.

I recently attended the funeral of a special and dear friend. My friend had requested a Humanist service and had met Susannah, a celebrant, during her stay at the local Hospice.

From her opening words, I felt that Susannah was a true professional who made me relax and feel assured that my friends wishes had been fully understood. She spoke with calmness, warmth and a great understanding of who my friend had been.  She was clear, engaging and led the service with a sense of honour and respect and I could almost believe that she had known my friend for many years.

I had written a poem for my friend, which Susannah read out. Her delivery and intonation really bought the poem to life as she managed to convey the love, humour, gratitude and celebration I had felt from having had my dear friend in my life.

It was the perfect service, given by the perfect person, for someone who had loved life. Thank you Susannah. She would have loved you.

On the day that our 90 year old mother died, I searched for a humanist funeral celebrant, and thankfully found Susannah. Talking to her, I had an immediate sense of her calm, professional, caring manner, and in our one to one call a few days later, she listened carefully and thoughtfully before guiding me through what the process would entail. She took care of all the details, working seamlessly with the funeral director. Over the ensuing couple of weeks, my siblings and I worked with her to craft a beautiful funeral service which was a perfect and very fitting goodbye to our mother. Susannah conducted the service with a truly lovely blend of reverence, respect and humour, and we are so grateful that she was part of our day.

Thank you so much for your part in J’s celebration. It was beautifully judged and many people, whilst speaking enthusiastically of the readings and the music, were touched by the way you guided them towards contemplation at the appropriate moments. It was as close anyone could get to what J wanted and I think that was an achievement. It was lovely.

Susannah provided a brilliant service as the celebrant for my brother-in-law’s funeral. From the very first contact she put us at ease and gave us the time and space to discuss and think about how we would like the service to go. She provided excellent suggestions and did some amazing research to find just the right poem to fit the bill! She helped us pull together what was quite a complicated process, at all times remaining supportive and professional. She sorted things out with the funeral home directly, taking off some of the pressure for us. We never felt rushed which I feel is so important. On the day she handled everything so well, much better than any of us, (including mourners bursting in late!) – she didn’t miss a beat. If you would like a non-denomination service which is tailored beautifully to the person you have lost, Susannah is certainly the person to help you.

This was our first time working with a humanist celebrant and Susannah guided us through the process calmly and considerately. We wanted a service to mark mum's death and celebrate her life and Susannah balanced this beautifully, taking little patches of memories and making them into a beautiful quilt of a tribute. On the day of the funeral, she was a reassuring presence, and she gave the service a real warmth. Mum would have approved.

— Hazel

I spent an interesting afternoon when Susannah came to see me to arrange my husband’s funeral. We discussed all the different stages of his life, his achievements, occupations and interests and how everything would fit into the order of service, including music and photos. She kept us up to date with progress and liaised with the funeral director which made everything less stressful at a difficult time. I was very impressed with how Susannah had put everything about my husband together perfectly and on the day, the service couldn’t have been better. I’m sure he would have approved, so I definitely recommend Susannah.

I wanted to let you know that I have not stopped thinking about the service last week and how lovely it was. And that was because of you.

You truly captured the spirit of Aunty J, and made her final goodbye so very special. I think she would have approved.

Many people commented on how wonderful the service was and how uplifted they felt despite it also being very sad.

You are a very special person, keep doing what you are doing, you are truly making a difference. (March '25)

Humanist funerals

Humanist funerals, memorials and ash ceremonies are a fitting way to honour a unique life with warmth, sensitivity and meaning, but without reference to religion or an afterlife. They put the story of the person who has died at the heart of the ceremony, paying tribute to them and the legacy they leave, and provide an opportunity to bring people together, not just to share sadness but to celebrate a life lived.
