Hi, I'm David

Funerals are, by their nature, sad. Grief has often been described as love with nowhere left to go. And yet, they can also be filled with warmth, reverence, and even moments of celebration.

They may be shaped by favourite stories, reflections on the difference someone made, or a quiet toast to a life well lived. At other times, they need to allow space for more complicated truths, because not every life is long, and not every relationship is straightforward. Whatever your person’s story, we will honour it truthfully, with compassion and care.

What I value most about humanist funerals is the freedom they offer to reflect a life as it was truly lived. There are no set rules and no prescribed format. Every ceremony is bespoke, shaped around the individual, their values, their relationships, and the legacy they leave behind.

My role is to help you create a ceremony that tells a genuine life story with warmth and sensitivity, allowing space for both reflection and connection.

Humanist ceremonies are inclusive and welcoming to everyone, regardless of background or belief. They can take place in a traditional funeral setting or somewhere more personal and informal. You may wish to include music, readings, shared silence, personal tributes, or stories that bring comfort or even smiles. There is no right or wrong, only what feels meaningful to you and those attending.

I work closely with families, listening carefully, gathering memories and shaping them into a ceremony that feels authentic and supportive at a difficult and emotional time. I can write and deliver the entire ceremony, or support family and friends who wish to speak themselves.

I also offer alternative ceremonies such as ash interments, scatterings, memorials, or celebrations of life, when a traditional funeral does not feel right or when more time is needed. My aim is always to create a ceremony that offers comfort, honours a unique human life, and gives those attending space to acknowledge loss and remember well.

The first step is a no-obligation conversation, where we can talk through your circumstances, explore the different options available, and help you decide whether I’m the right celebrant for you and the ceremony you’d like to create.

HUMANIST CEREMONIES™ is the network of more than 550 celebrants, trained by national charity Humanists UK to a gold standard to provide memorable and meaningful humanist ceremonies to non-religious people. Operating throughout England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands, we deliver authentic, tailor-made and heartfelt ceremonies for life’s key moments. They are always inclusive and welcoming, regardless of the beliefs of those attending.

You can trust Humanist Ceremonies celebrants: We are DBS-checked, fully insured, and regularly peer reviewed for quality assurance. We are committed to a code of conduct, and have a transparent and robust complaints process in the rare case of a problem. We all pay a monthly fee to Humanists UK to further support the work of the charity, and are part of a regional network for like-minded celebrants for support and learning.

Humanist funerals

Humanist funerals, memorials and ash ceremonies are a fitting way to honour a unique life with warmth, sensitivity and meaning, but without reference to religion or an afterlife. They put the story of the person who has died at the heart of the ceremony, paying tribute to them and the legacy they leave, and provide an opportunity to bring people together, not just to share sadness but to celebrate a life lived.
