Hi, I'm Caroline

Among other things, I am an ex-stand up comedian, an avid reader, a keen amateur actress, an Instagram cemetery photographer, and a collector of Toadstools, anything cow print, and Irregular Choice shoes.

I first heard about Humanist UK funerals in 1998 when my baby daughter, Alice, died, and having a meaningful, personal funeral made a huge difference to a horrendous experience.

When my Grandma died in 2011, I wrote the ceremony for a Celebrant to deliver, but it was only after my Dad’s funeral in 2016 that I decided to train as a celebrant so that I could offer others the chance to give their loved ones the funeral that is right for them and their families.

It’s not a popular opinion, but I love good funerals and detest bad ones, so I will always go out of my way to make sure that every funeral I give is as good as it possibly can be and is an accurate reflection of the deceased. The best compliment I can get for my work is, “it’s like you knew them.”

I also work as a University lecturer, so have a lot of experience of public speaking. I have written for magazines, academic book chapters, and newspapers, as well as writing funeral ceremonies, so I am skilled at writing in a range of styles to suit the audience.

I can work with you to create the perfect ceremony, whether that be traditional and sombre or upbeat and life affirming. Ceremonies I have led have included singing, dancing, and a chorus of Happy Birthday to You, but I have also led many with a more sedate format when that was more appropriate for the family concerned.

Caroline provided a professional, comforting and personalised service. We all felt so relaxed when meeting with Caroline to discuss what we would like. We shared stories with Caroline, which she transformed into a perfect write up about my dad. She captured him so well – the speech was beautifully written and she delivered it in a wonderful way, using humour to make some parts more lighthearted and joyful, but giving complete respect and sympathy when speaking about the end of his life. I would thoroughly recommend Caroline to anyone wanting a special and personal funeral service. It has really helped me start to grieve for my dad. Thank you.

HUMANIST CEREMONIES™ is the network of more than 550 celebrants, trained by national charity Humanists UK to a gold standard to provide memorable and meaningful humanist ceremonies to non-religious people. Operating throughout England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands, we deliver authentic, tailor-made and heartfelt ceremonies for life’s key moments. They are always inclusive and welcoming, regardless of the beliefs of those attending.

You can trust Humanist Ceremonies celebrants: We are DBS-checked, fully insured, and regularly peer reviewed for quality assurance. We are committed to a code of conduct, and have a transparent and robust complaints process in the rare case of a problem. We all pay a monthly fee to Humanists UK to further support the work of the charity, and are part of a regional network for like-minded celebrants for support and learning.

Humanist funerals

Humanist funerals, memorials and ash ceremonies are a fitting way to honour a unique life with warmth, sensitivity and meaning, but without reference to religion or an afterlife. They put the story of the person who has died at the heart of the ceremony, paying tribute to them and the legacy they leave, and provide an opportunity to bring people together, not just to share sadness but to celebrate a life lived.
