Sandi Toksvig is a well known writer, comedian and presenter. She was born in Copenhagen, grew up in the US where her father, a foreign correspondent, had moved for work, and was sent to an English boarding school (which she hated) at 14. She began her comedy career at Girton College, Cambridge, where she wrote and performed in the first all-woman Footlights show. She performed at the first night of The Comedy Store in Londonand was part of the famous improvisational comedy team, the Comedy Store Players. She has appeared in many television programmes including "Mock the Week", "QI" and "Have I Got News For You", and is a familiar voice on BBC Radio 4 where she chairs "The News Quiz", and until this year presented its travel programme "Excess Baggage".

Sandi's plays include "Bully Boy", which focuses on post-traumatic stress among British servicemen, the musical "Big Night Out", and "Pocket Dream".  She is also a highly successful novelist – if you buy her  books at Amazon.co.uk through this link a small commission will go to Humanists UK.

One reason for her support for Humanism emerged when she told The Guardian about her outing as a lesbian by a tabloid newspaper: "We had death threats, mainly from very religious people who very kindly were going to kill me on God's behalf because he's busy."
