Ahead of potential legislation, the States Assembly in Jersey is seeking islanders’ views on assisted dying. Channel Islands Humanists has responded to the consultation, outlining the case for a change in law. The consultation response included examples of international laws as well as possible safeguards.
Channel Islands Humanists is encouraging Jersey residents to share their views and show their support for assisted dying. Residents can respond to the Slido, logging in using the code #AssistedDyingJSY. They can also email any questions directly to AssistedDying@gov.je.
In 2021 Channel Islands Humanists welcomed Jersey’s vote to approve ’in principle’ assisted dying, making it the first part of the UK and Crown Dependencies to do so. Earlier last year, Humanists UK gave evidence to the Citizens’ Jury that preceded the vote. The evidence centred on the importance of respecting personal autonomy, and recognising the need for assisted dying legislation to cover both those with terminal and incurable illnesses.
Full legislation is expected to be drafted and debated over the next 13 months, coming into force after that.
Humanists UK Assisted Dying Campaigner Nathan Stilwell said:
‘We understand this public engagement is not meant to change the decision to approve assisted dying “in principle” in Jersey. However, this is a good opportunity to have your voice heard, show your support for assisted dying, and get in touch with officials with any questions you have. It’s important that the States Assembly in Jersey continues to listen to islanders throughout this process.’
